» IPS officers brother goes missing in J and K
4th June 18

A medical student, who is the brother of an Indian Police Services (IPS) officer, has gone missing from south Kashmir’s Shopian, with the security forces suspecting him of having joined militant ranks.

Shamsul Haq Mengnoo, son of Mohammad Rafiq Mengnoo, a resident of Draggud village, is missing since May 26, according to family sources. A fierce encounter took place at Draggud on April 1, which left seven local militants dead. It has remained a militant recruitment pocket.

“An investigation is on. There is nothing concrete to suggest that he has joined militant ranks so far,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

Mengnoo was pursuing a Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery course at a government college in Srinagar. His brother, an IPS officer, is posted outside the State. The family has not filed any missing report. “We are looking into all angles, and not just militancy. The investigations remain inconclusive,” said another police official.
