Major General Rajeev Chaudhry, VSM, is an alumni of National Defence Academy. The officer was commissioned on 17 Dec 1983. The officer has done well on all courses including prestigious Advance Explosive Ordnance Devices Course in UK. He is qualified on DSSC, SC, HC and NDC Courses.
He has spent large amount of his service with troops in difficult areas including Far East, Rann of Kuchch, Joshimath, Plains of Punjab, Deserts and five tenures in J&K. He has also been part of Op Brasstacks, Op Trident, Op Bajrang, Op Rakshak and Op Parakram. He has commanded 418 (I) Fd Coy, 62 Engr Regt and 471 Engr Bde where he was awarded Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service. He has also been responsible for conceptualising and conducting the first ever and only Engineer Brigade Exercise with US Engr Bde as part of EX YUDH ABHYAS series of joint exercises between USA and India in Mar 2012. He was also nominated as Ex Director of EX FORCE 18, one of the largest multinational exercise on Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA), in Mar 2016, where 260 delegates from 18 countries participated. He has been Senior Instructor of Bomb Disposal School at CME, where he spearheaded the project to transform it into Explosive Devices Wing. Besides this, he also has to his credit, the creation of first ever IED Rg within India at CME. He has been Cdr of CTW and Cdr, Faculty of Comb Engg at CME.
The General Officer took over as Chief Engineer Southern Command, the largest Command of the Indian Army on 01 Feb 2017 where he is mandated with crucial responsibilities like monitoring construction and maintenance of defence infrastructure in South India to include Twelve States and Five Union Territories including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.
Being in dual role, he is advisor on all combat engineering and works related matters to seven Commands of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Tri-Services with vital infrastructure like runways, docks, harbours and jetties, ammunition and explosive storage sheds and military roads with a budget of Rs 20,000 Cr.
The General Officer has infused major impetus to modernization and automation projects in Southern Command with the crucial projects being undertaken or planned across a large number of stations of Southern Command.
The General Officer has also very impressive professional educational background which includes M Tech (Structures) from IISc Bangalore, M Sc (Def Studies), Diploma in Sr Level Def Mgt, M Phil (Def & Mgt Studies) and M Phil (Def & Strat Studies). He likes to write and has got published numerous articles in various Jls for which he has won many awards incl COAS Bronze Medal, GOC-in-ARTRAC Gold Medal, Scholar Warrior Badge and Brig NB Grant Gold Medal (Twice). He has been a keen sportsman and represented Corps of Engrs in Sailing and Rowing at National Level. He has also shown keen interest in various adventure activities and actively participated in Hand Gliding and Para Sailing and has qualified on courses in Para Jumping, Micro light Flying and Scuba Diving.
